Words With Q and No U: Every Valid Play

The Q Problem

The Q is the most feared tile in Scrabble. It is worth a juicy 10 points, but it almost always demands a U to do anything — and if the U is buried in the bag or on someone else's rack, the Q can sit on your rack for turn after turn, blocking better plays. The solution every strong player carries in their head is a short list of words that use Q with no U at all.

The Essential List

Start with the one word that matters most:

QI — energy or life force in Chinese philosophy. Two tiles, 11 points, no U required. This single word solves the Q problem more often than all the others combined.

After QI, learn the short core:

QAT — a leafy shrub that is chewed as a stimulant (also spelled KHAT).
QIS and QATS — the plurals, for when you have an S to spare.
QADI and QAID — a Muslim judge and a North African tribal leader, respectively.
QOPH — a Hebrew letter. Handy when you also hold an O, P, and H.

Longer Q-Without-U Words

When you have room to build, these open up bigger scores:

QANAT — an underground irrigation channel.
QINTAR and QINDAR — units of Albanian currency (with plurals QINTARS, QINDARS).
FAQIR — a Muslim or Hindu ascetic (plural FAQIRS).
SHEQEL — the currency of Israel (plurals SHEQELS, SHEQALIM).
UMIAQ — an Inuit open boat.
MBAQANGA — a style of South African music, and a spectacular tile-dump if you can build it.

A quick warning: dictionaries disagree at the edges. QI, QAT, QADI, QAID, and QOPH are safe almost everywhere, but some of the rarer entries are valid only in the Collins (CSW) list and not in the North American (TWL) one. When in doubt, check the word in our dictionary before you commit.

When You Are Truly Stuck: Dumping the Q

Sometimes there is no U and no Q-without-U play available. Do not let the Q anchor you. It is often worth exchanging it — trade the Q back into the bag on a turn where you have nothing strong anyway. A Q that costs you three turns of good plays is worth far less than the 10 points printed on it.

Practice

The fastest way to internalize these is to feed a rack that contains a Q into our word unscrambler. Add a Q with some common letters and see what it finds — you will quickly notice how often QI and QAT appear, and the list will lodge itself in memory. Do that a few times and the Q stops being a curse and becomes just another tile.
