What Is an Anagram?

An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another. LISTEN becomes SILENT; the letters are identical, only the order changes. The best anagrams do something more: they rearrange a word into a phrase that comments on the original, like turning ASTRONOMER into MOON STARER.

A Short History

The word itself comes from the Greek ana, meaning "back" or "again," and gramma, meaning "letter." Anagrams were a serious pastime in ancient Greece and Rome, where some believed a name rearranged could reveal hidden truths about a person's fate. They flourished across Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when scholars and poets traded them as intellectual sport. The fashion was so strong that King Louis XIII of France is said to have appointed a Royal Anagrammatist — a court official paid simply to invent them.

Famous Anagrams

Some anagrams are famous precisely because the rearrangement feels almost too fitting:

DORMITORY becomes DIRTY ROOM.
THE EYES becomes THEY SEE.
ASTRONOMER becomes MOON STARER.
ELEVEN PLUS TWO becomes TWELVE PLUS ONE — and, remarkably, both phrases use the same thirteen letters and both equal thirteen.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE can be rearranged into I AM A WEAKISH SPELLER.

Part of the delight is that these are not forced; every letter is accounted for.

How to Spot and Solve Anagrams

Solving an anagram is a search for order in a scramble. A few techniques help:

Sort the letters. Writing the letters in alphabetical order strips away the misleading original arrangement and lets you see the raw material.
Anchor on the vowels. Count them and space them out; most words alternate consonants and vowels in fairly predictable ways.
Look for common endings. Clusters like -ING, -TION, -ED, and -ER are frequent landing spots and can unlock the rest of the word.
Recognize letter families. Certain letter sets make famous anagram groups. The letters in LISTEN also spell SILENT, ENLIST, TINSEL, and INLETS — a five-word family worth knowing.
