Winning Wordle consistently is not about vocabulary — it is about information. You have six guesses to identify one of a few thousand possible answers, and every guess should cut that pool of possibilities roughly in half or better. Players who solve in three or four guesses are not luckier than everyone else; they simply waste fewer guesses.

Guess 1: Maximize Coverage

Open with a word full of common, distinct letters — SLATE, CRANE, and TRACE are all excellent. The goal is not to guess the answer on turn one (the odds are tiny) but to light up as many high-frequency letters as possible. Treat guess one as a scan, not an attempt.

Guess 2: Keep Discovering

This is where most players lose a guess. After a couple of greens, the temptation is to start guessing the answer. Resist it. If your first guess left the letters R, S, T, and D untested, your second word should test those — even if it means ignoring the greens you already found. You will almost always finish faster by gathering information for one more turn than by stabbing at the answer early.

Guess 3: Narrow and Commit

By your third guess you usually know most of the letters and several positions. Now switch modes: use everything you know to commit to a real candidate. List the letters you have confirmed, note which positions are still open, and choose a word that fits every clue. This is the guess where the puzzle typically falls.

The Hard-Mode Trap

Hard Mode forces you to reuse every revealed clue in later guesses. It sounds disciplined, but it can actually cost you guesses, because it prevents the information-gathering second guess described above. If you play Hard Mode, lean even harder on a strong, letter-rich opening word, since you lose the freedom to explore later.

Common Mistakes That Cost Guesses

• Chasing a single letter. Do not spend a guess just to place one known letter — pack every guess with new information.
• Forgetting double letters. Answers can repeat a letter (like ALLOY or MAMMA). If several likely words are eliminated, consider a repeat.
• Ignoring gray clues. A gray letter is information too — it removes a letter from every remaining possibility.
